Ginkgo on Japanese scene painting Edo period

Autumn trees and grasses by a stream.

渓流春秋草木図屏風

To the left, golden Ginkgo leaves shimmer in the late afternoon light with bold red and white maple leaves.

This painted Japanese scene immortalises a view of life: a flow in the river, growth in the trees, colour and movement that expresses transient joy.

Six-panel folding screen, ink, color, gold and silver on paper. Rimpa school. Japan, Edo-period.  Late 17th–early 18th century.

Picture and enlargement: The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
