Jade carving and Ginkgo leaves

Chinese jade (Chinese: 玉 ) : "Autumn of Suzhou" by Yang Xi

The peace and tranquillity of the ancient water town of Suzhou is vividly depicted through the ginkgo tree leaves.

In China, jade has been a material of the highest value for over 8,000 years, prized for its beauty and magical properties. Jade carving is now being revived.
The breakthrough in jade design can be seen from artworks by Yang Xi, who is an expert in Suzhou-style jade carving.

After a jade culture exchange of four years, the British Museum purchased several contemporary jade artworks which are exhibited in its refurbished Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery and Alleyne Jade Gallery.
Queen Elizabeth II attended the reopening ceremony of both galleries on November 8 last year.
